How to create a sitemap?

  1. First decide which format of sitemap you wanna use i.e. XML, RSS, mRSS, Atom 1.0 and text.
  2. Create the sitemap either automatically or manually.
  3. Make your sitemap available to Google by adding it to robots.txt file or directly submitting it to Search Console.

General Guidelines:

  1. Use consistent, fully-qualified URLs- Redirected to one version of the site & use only one format in the sitemap.
  2. UTF-8 encoded- Sitemap must be UTF-8 encoded and URLs escaped appropriately.
  3. Break up large sitemaps- A sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50MB.
  4. Alternate pages for different languages or regions- In this case use hreflang in either a sitemap or html tags to indicate the alternate URLs.
